Look great, Appear Natural, Be Memorable

10 Professional Headshot Photo Tips

It used to be that only movie stars and models needed fantastic headshots to reach their full career potential. Now, many professionals are featured on company websites, and most have at least some social media presence. The old saying "a picture is worth a thousand words" may be overused, but it is still relevant today. Using expert quality headshots to enhance your reputation as a professional is the easiest way to make a good first impression on potential clients and industry peers.

Once you have decided to invest in headshots, how can you ensure that the headshots capture the most professional image? What can you do before the shoot to get the best possible results?

Tips For Taking Professional Headshots With Spectacular Results

1. Schedule a Pre-session Consultation

Meeting with your photographer before the shoot builds rapport between you. When you feel comfortable with your photographer, your photoshoot will go more smoothly. You can take the opportunity to discuss any questions or concerns you might have.

Also, together with your photographer, you can plan a direction for the shoot. A pre-session meeting gives you time to explain what type of image you are going for and if your company has specific requirements to stay on brand. This information helps the photographer know what kind of lighting and backdrops to have ready for the photoshoot.

2. Create a Mood Board

Provide your photographer with examples of photos that demonstrate the look you would like. Images help the photographer to understand precisely what you want. If you can, explain what it is that you like about the examples.

3. Choose the Right Clothing

Wearing a variety of colours and tones are great! However, start with foundational basics like black, white, grey, earth tones, and navy.

4. Favour Solid Colours

Solid colours photograph best. Bright, vibrant colours can work too for a fun look, but the basics help make sure we're focusing on you. Many photography guides list wearing patterns as a definite no. However, patterns can be okay as long as they are kept very simple. Any patterns that are too "loud" will distract focus from your face.

5. Consider Your Neckline

V- necks or U-necks are flattering because they visually elongate the upper body. These necklines will help your neck appear longer, and generally, vertical lines will make you feel taller. It is best to avoid sleeveless tops and dresses for headshots, as the camera tends to highlight skin more strongly than fabric. You want the focus on your facial features, not on your arms.

6. Choose Textures

Wearing a soft fitted sweater is an excellent choice for a photo shoot. Fabric with texture adds interest without distracting attention from you. Your top can be crew neck, v-neck, or any scoop neck, just something that texturally feels very soft. A reminder to make sure whatever you choose is fitted too, because baggy clothes don't translate to professionalism on film.

7. Get a Trim

The day after a hairdresser appointment, most people feel more positive and confident. Note that the camera will pick up on small details. Getting a simple trim and a touch up on your roots just before your shoot can significantly improve the results. The "new haircut" confidence boost will help too!

8. Rehearse Facial Expressions

Take a moment to think about what image you want to be reflected in your photos. If you have a serious profession, you may not want to just "smile for the camera" like you would in a family photo. Use a mirror to test out some looks before your headshot appointment to capture the right feeling.

9. Get Enough Sleep and Water

A lack of sleep and hydration will show on your face. Without enough sleep and water, your face can appear puffy, and the circles under your eyes may appear darker. The simple act of getting a good rest before your photo session can help you look fresh and capable.

10. Relax and Have Fun

When you are stressed or nervous during your photoshoot, that will come through in the final result. Try to enjoy the process. If you have followed these ten tips, there is nothing to worry about, and you are more than ready. If you can relax and have fun during the shoot, your photos will be more genuine and natural.
